Blocking someone on Discord allows you to avoid receiving messages from people you don’t want to have contact with. But some people worry that the person they’re blocking might discover they’re no longer connected on the platform.

If you’re curious about what happens when you block someone on Discord or how to tell if someone blocked you, you came to the right spot! Read on to learn more about blocking someone on Discord.

What Happens When You Block Someone on Discord

What Happens When You Block Someone on Discord?

These are the things that happen when you block someone on Discord:

1. Not Available in Your Friends List

If you block a person on Discord, the system will assume that you no longer want to be friends with them. It will then automatically delete them from your “Friends List”

Of course, this is only applicable if you were initially friends. They won’t be able to trace it on this menu if you weren’t friends before blocking.

Find out more about how to check your “Friends List” from Discord Support.

2. Can’t Send You DMs

The blocked Discord user will no longer be able to send you messages. They will know this when they encounter an error saying, “Your message could not be delivered”.

3. Hidden Messages on Server Chats

If you’re on the same server as the person you blocked, you won’t be able to see their messages on the server. Discord will display a “1 Blocked Message” on the server instead.

But if you’re curious, you can view the message they sent by clicking the “Show message” option on your desktop. To view them on the mobile app, tap the “Blocked Messages” option.

4. Can’t Send You a Friend Request

When you block someone on Discord, they won’t be able to send you a friend request. A prompt saying “Friend Request Failed” will appear on their end. If you want the blocked contact to be able to send you a friend request or the other way around, you need to unblock them.

You can also configure which Discord users can send you a friend request without having to block them. Check out Discord Support for details.

5. Can’t See Your “About Me” Section

Blocked Discord users can still see your profile picture but won’t be able to view your profile’s “About Me” section. This includes your bio, mutual servers, and friends.

When the blocked user clicks on your username, they will only see an empty field under “User Info”.

Since Discord doesn’t have a feature to see if someone blocked you, you’ll need to be resourceful and try the above methods to check.

Does the Discord User You Block Get a Notification?

The Discord users you blocked won’t get a notification when you block them. Discord immediately restricts the communication between the two of you. The platform also removes existing direct message history between you and the blocked user from your inbox.

On the one hand, Discord sends you a notification when a blocked user sends a message to a server to which you belong. You can mute the server to stop receiving notifications.

Can a Blocked Person on Discord See Your Status?

Yes, a blocked person on Discord can still see your status if you share the same server. If you’re not in a mutual server, then no, they won’t be able to see your status after blocking them.

Your status can show up as “Online”, “Idle”, “Do Not Disturb”, or “Invisible”, depending on how you set it. This impacts whether you receive notifications and the colored status icon next to your avatar.

If you don’t want the blocked Discord user to know whether you’re online, you should set your status to “Invisible”. This status will always show you as offline, even when you’re active.

How to Tell If Someone Blocked You on Discord

You can tell that someone blocked you on Discord if you can no longer send direct messages, react to their previous message, find them on your “Friends List”, send them a friend request, and see their “User Info”

Discord purposefully keeps things vague to protect user privacy. If you think someone has blocked you, accept their decision and don’t try to contact them.

How to Talk to Someone Who Blocked You on Discord

You can still talk to someone who blocked you on Discord in voice channels. Discord will not mute the blocked person when you’re both on the same voice channel. If the other person does not want to hear you talk, they can exit the voice channel.

You can also try contacting them outside Discord if you’re friends on other communication platforms.

Check Discord Support to learn how to do voice chat.

What Is the Difference Between “Block” & “Remove Friend” on Discord

The difference between “Block” and “Remove Friend” on Discord is that blocking someone doesn’t allow them to message you. Meanwhile, removing someone from your “Friends List” lets the user send you messages since you’re still connected on Discord chats.

The goal of blocking is to restrict direct communication, but the purpose of removing a friend on Discord is to break the friendship without necessarily stopping future direct messages. Both actions, however, have implications for how you interact with the other person on the platform.

Blocking Someone on Discord Limits Your Interactions

Now that you know what happens when you block someone on Discord, you can use it whenever you need it. Blocking someone on Discord doesn’t mean you can’t be friends anymore; it’s just a way to manage interactions and protect yourself from offensive behavior.

On Discord, blocking someone else signifies that someone wants to stop communicating with them directly. This could be due to disagreements, harassment, or a privacy preference. However, that does not imply that the two cannot live on shared Discord servers or that their connection is irreparable.
